Keeping Your Kids’ Feet Safe This Summer

When we think of summer, we often think of sun, beaches, and bare feet. However, these things can also lead to potential foot injuries, especially for kids. This is why the Foot and Ankle Specialists of Illinois want to make sure your little ones feet are protected this summer.

Here are some helpful tips to keep your children’s feet safe this summer:

Keep their feet covered. From injuries, to burns, by protecting their feet with the appropriate shoe for their activity, you can avoid cuts from to the foot glass or broken shells, as well as burns from hot sand or pavement.

Avoid sandals when possible. While sandals and flip-flops are widely used during hot summer months, they can leave your kids’ feet unprotected, which means they are more susceptible to infections. It is a good idea to ensure they are wearing the right shoes for the particular activity they are participating in.

Apply sunscreen to feet. Even those little toes can get sunburn, so be sure to apply sunscreen regularly to your kids’ feet. Don’t forget about the bottoms of their feet as well, especially since this is one of the most neglected areas of the body when it comes to sunscreen.

Trim their toenails. Be sure to keep their toenails trimmed, which will keep them from becoming in-grown, which can result in an infection if not treated right away.

Treat injuries immediately. If your child gets a cut on their foot, has an insect bite, or is suffering from a blister, be sure to provide the proper care immediately, which will not only help to ensure you are preventing any further issues, but will also allow the chance for the injury to heal quickly.

If your child is suffering from a foot or ankle injury, be sure to consult with the Foot and Ankle Specialists of Illinois today.
