As a podiatrist, I see and treat a variety of foot and ankle injuries. However, these are the most common foot injuries and their symptoms:
Bunions
Perhaps the most common foot issue these days, bunions are commonly found on people who over-pronate, relying on their ligaments and bones to support their feet, instead of the muscles that support their arch. Symptoms of bunions often include:
- Pain and/or tenderness on their big toe
- Pain is increased when wearing narrow or pointy-toed shoes
- Experiencing inflammation of the big toe, increasing the angulation of the toe
Stress Fractures
There are a variety of types of stress fractures, however, some of the most common types are the ones that occur in the metatarsals. From poor diet, to over-training, stress fractures can be managed and treated. The symptoms of a stress fracture include:
- Foot tenderness
- Swelling on top of the foot
- Inability to bear weight on the foot
- Continued pain, even after rest
Plantar Fasciitis
This occurs when there is inflammation and micro tearing in the plantar fascia on the heel of the foot, and is often caused by athletes who over-pronate or wear shoes that do not offer enough support. The symptoms of plantar fasciitis include:
- Pain and stiffness in the heel
- Burning sensation in the heel
